The US is set to deliver over 500 interceptor missiles to Ukraine under Washington’s ongoing support for Kyiv.

In order to strengthen its air defense against an upsurge in Russian missile and drone assaults, the United States intends to provide more than 500 interceptor missiles to Ukraine in the upcoming weeks.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal, interceptors for the Patriot and NASAMS missile defense systems are included in this expedited shipment, which is a component of Washington’s continued assistance for Kyiv. It is anticipated that the additional air defense capability will help Ukraine meet its air defense requirements through the end of 2024 and improve its capacity to fend off air attacks.

One of the main components of a larger $6 billion aid package for Ukraine is the impending missile delivery. In order to guarantee a consistent supply for Ukraine’s continuing military requirements, the U.S. has also been looking at other support possibilities, such as the possible acquisition of weapons from other allies.

Even though Ukraine has received a significant amount of military cash, more than $7 billion of that money has not yet been used. Over $2 billion of this has been set aside expressly for long-term defense contracts, which will guarantee Ukraine’s military capabilities continue to be strong over time and offer consistent assistance.

Politico reported on November 8, 2024, that the United States is planning to send a “small number of contractors” to Ukraine to help maintain F-16 fighter jets and other air defense systems in addition to this missile cargo.

According to a Pentagon official, this move represents a major change in policy. A growing number of inoperable weapon systems in Ukraine’s arsenal have caused the White House to change its mind about the idea, which it had previously rejected as late as August. To maintain these systems functional and efficient, the contractors will offer crucial maintenance assistance.
